The FLATSTOCK poster show is presented by the American Poster Institute (API). It is an ongoing series of exhibitions featuring the work of many of the most popular concert poster artists working today.

The API is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving poster artists and promoting the art form. Both the API and its FLATSTOCK series were organized in 2002 as a result of conversations between interested artists and supporters frequenting the popular website GigPosters.com. The best concert posters have always captured both the essence of the music they promoted and the spirit of the time in which they were produced. This is as true today as it was in San Francisco during the Sixties.

The FLATSTOCK shows provide the general public with an ongoing series of opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who’ve created it — they provide the API with a way to present the poster artists collectively while showcasing the breadth of individual styles they represent.

Up! Fair Workshop!

Monday, October 25th, 2010

UP! Fair Workshop
-DIY Screenprinting Techniques with Cricket Press-

Saturday, November 20 · 1:00pm - 2:00pm

The Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning
251 West Second Street
Lexington, KY

One of the characteristics of many “boutique” comics is their unique, hand-printed covers - many of which are printed by the comics creators themselves. Screen printing is one of the most basic forms of printmaking that can be done at home with relatively few materials. Learn the basics of screen printing and how to give a finished look to your comic. A guide for beginners and basic materials list will be provided to all attendees. While you’re there try the process yourself and walk away with your own hand-pulled print!

This event is one of many free workshops being held as part of the upcoming UP! Fair: A Celebration of Sequential Art and the Independent Publisher.

UP! Fair

Monday, October 11th, 2010

It’s called Up! Fair and it’s a free, all-day event celebrating the independent creator with hands-on workshops (make your own mini comic, learn how to screen-print) , panel discussions (the hows of independent publishing, using today’s media for marketing, how to be a dynamic storyteller), and professional development courses (adobe programs, digital coloring). The event is to encourage and educate today’s authors on their medium, art, and options. The first floor will be full of tabling authors & comic artists selling their books and talking with the public. A reception is scheduled during the 19th Gallery Hop where an exhibit of participating artist’s work will be displayed and the organizers will offer a panel discussion on the upcoming event. We keep using the word celebration…because fundamentally that is the feel behind what we’ve organized.

Sara is one of the organizers of the event and will be offering a DIY Screenprinting workshop on Sat. Nov. 20th. More details to come!
