Process Thread - My First Letterpress Gigposter

Well, it’s more like a handbill…for an upcoming Minders show at The Dame. Since they were wanting to heavily promote this show around campus, thus needing a high qty, i thought it best to create it on the letterpress. And it was a great excuse to use our Vandercook SP-15 for the first time.

After working up a design and sending an illustration off to be made into a magnesium plate, I started work on what would be the first color. This first color consisted of a linoleum block that was carved into a heart and hand-placed type from our collection. It only took a few passes to get all the type to line up correctly on the page. Here’s the final result…printed on Stonehinge archival paper to give it that deckle edge.

Now ready to print my second color (the next night to allow for drying), the magnesium block is placed in the bed of the press and we’re ready to go. Again, it only took a few passes on some scrap paper to get everything lined up correctly.

And printing begins.

Multiply this by 165…and I’m done!

My first Vandercook experience…and i’m pretty pleased with the result. Now I’m going to take this Illustration and make an Art Print…eventually.
